If you have enjoyed an ice cream cone this summer, you have Nancy M. Johnson to thank. Philadelphia native, in 1843, she patented the hand crank ice cream machine that would churn out the now summer staple within 45 minutes at home. As sugar became more affordable and ice harvesting and insulation grew, this created the perfect conditions for the hand crank machine, which underwent up to 70 improvements in the first few years of its invention. Several years prior, African-American chef Augustus Jackson, a White House chef, came up with the modern manufacturing of ice cream as well as several different recipes. And just several years later, Jacob Fussell, in the milk industry, would pioneer the wide sale of ice cream to the public. What a delicious collaborative effort…

Solar energy that doesn’t block the view
A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy while allowing people to actually see through the window. It is called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator and can be used on buildings, cell phones and any other device that has a clear surface. And, according to Richard Lunt of MSU’s College of Engineering, the key word is “transparent.”
